THE STORY SO FAR

The year 2020 has reminded us in no uncertain terms how delicately balanced our ecological and economic life support systems are.  The health and wellbeing of our front line health workers is in the spotlight, as is the health of our families and our society.  As a result of Covid-19, we are embracing the widespread move to online delivery by bringing you a truly memorable, world class, international professional and personal development event!

In the 2010 book, ‘Planet Obesity‘, Professors Garry Egger and Boyd Swinburn explain how industrialisation, affluence and the development of new technologies has come at a potentially devastating cost – an epidemic of obesity, type 2 diabetes, CVD, cancers and mental illness, and an ecosystem being rapidly degraded by the pursuit of economic growth with disregard for the consequences.

Arguing that obesity is not a disease but a signal, the two professors explain why obesity was the ‘canary in the coal mine’, and which should have spurred us to act to address the bigger structural problems in society. They explain that although economic growth has led to an improved standard of living and ever increasing life spans, it is due to these very comforts that our bodies, environment and planet have gone into a downward spiral, manifested by an epidemic of chronic disease, a world clogged by waste and now facing the existential threat of an inhospitable climate.

Enter a recent discipline called Lifestyle Medicine, offering a comprehensive view of health and a ‘whole system’ approach to managing, treating and reversing chronic and lifestyle-related diseases.  Lifestyle Medicine operates at all levels of the system; from assisting our patients to make and maintain behavioural changes in clinical practice, to innovation in community programs, to public health and prevention through policies designed to promote a healthier society and environment.

In this world first online summit, Professors Egger and Swinburn will come together once again to discuss the role of Lifestyle Medicine in the Anthropocene and will be joined by a host of leaders from around the world, each bringing their unique wisdom and expertise to the most important health challenges facing each of us as individuals, our families, communities, societies and the health of our ecosystem.
